Fundraiser for Fisher House
Sunday, September 18, 3 – 7 PM
Elks Club – 175 School Street,
Hamden, CT
The Fisher House program provides assistance to America’s veterans, and their families. The Fisher House Foundation donates “comfort homes,” on the grounds of VA medical centers, to allow family members to be close to a loved one during hospitalization. According to the website, there is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center, to assist the families of veterans. There is no charge for a family to stay at a Fisher House.
The suggested donation for the event is just $10. This is a most oustanding and worthy effort, and hope you will be able to attend and help.
Anyone interested in attending can contact Fred McCarthy, at 203-288-3686.

Spring Gala 2011 Recap
For those who weren’t able to attend the recent Hamden Democratic Party Spring Gala, there was a nice article in the New Haven Register. Edward M. Kennedy, Jr., the son of Senator Edward Kennedy, gave a great speech about the meaning of being a Democrat, and public service. At the end of his speech, he pulled a card out of his suit jacket pocket, a Mass Card from Senator Kennedy’s funeral, and read the inscription, a quote from Senator Kennedy’s autobiography, True Compass. It was a very poignant moment.
Thanks to all those who were able to attend. The room was full, and that is only appropriate, since we were honoring eight great local Democrats, deserving recipients of the first Bernard Nitkin Distinguished Democrat Awards. Our congratulations once again to Judi Kozak, John Flanagan, Gerald Migliaro, Nancy Beals, Raymond Sims, John Carusone, Anthony Mentone and Don Werner. Our congratulations, and our thanks, for all you’ve done on behalf of Hamden and the Hamden Democratic Party. Our congratulations, too, to the very worthy recipient of the Gloria Sandillo Scholarship Award, Jenna McPhail. And our thanks to the Sandillo and Nitkin families, for granting us the right to honor others with their family names. Gloria and Bernie earned our respect and thanks, and it’s fitting that we continue to remember them through these awards.
HDTC Announces 2011 Meeting Schedule
The Hamden Democratic Town Committee has set its 2011 meeting schedule. All meetings take place on Mondays, and except for January, the meetings are held on the third Monday of the month. Also except for January, meetings are in the Senior Center, at Miller Memorial Library.
This year is a municipal election year, which means the Democratic Party will hold a convention in July to choose candidates for mayor, town clerk, council-at-large, district council, and Board of Education. The date for the convention has not yet been determined.
Please consult the calendar in the right side bar to see the exact dates for the meetings.
Hamden Makes History Again
As many of you already know, as the New Haven Register said, “Hamden made history.” Congratulations to Scott Jackson, whose campaign was honorable, intelligent, and poised. The campaign was a reflection of the candidate, and these qualities will help Scott to be a great mayor during some difficult times.
